📅 Best Time to Visit
July and August for hiking, lake activities, and wildlife viewing. January through March for ice walks, skiing at Marmot Basin, and dark sky stargazing. September and October for fall colours and quieter trails.
🌤️ Climate
Similar to Banff but slightly cooler. Winters are cold (−20°C to −5°C) with heavy snowfall. Summers are warm (15°C to 25°C). The Icefields Parkway can be icy in winter — snow tires or chains required.
✈️ Getting There

VIA Rail's Canadian train connects Jasper directly to Vancouver and Edmonton. The scenic Icefields Parkway from Banff to Jasper is one of the world's great drives.
Frequently Asked Questions — Jasper
Can I drive the Icefields Parkway in winter?
Yes, but snow tires or chains are required and the road may close temporarily in severe weather. The drive is extraordinary in winter — the frozen waterfalls and snow-covered peaks are spectacular.
What wildlife can I see in Jasper?
Jasper has exceptional wildlife viewing — elk are commonly seen in the townsite, grizzly and black bears are regularly spotted along the Icefields Parkway, and wolves, moose, and bighorn sheep are frequently seen.
Is Jasper or Banff better?
Both are extraordinary — Banff has more iconic lakes (Louise, Moraine) and is closer to Calgary, while Jasper is wilder, less crowded, and has the Columbia Icefield, Maligne Lake, and the dark sky preserve. Wendy recommends combining both on a Rockies road trip.
