Planning Your Canadian Rockies Road Trip Trip

📅 Best Time to Visit

June through September for the best road conditions and lake access. July and August are the warmest and busiest months — book accommodation well in advance. September and October offer fall colours and fewer crowds. The Icefields Parkway is open year-round but requires snow tires in winter.

🌤️ Climate

Alpine climate — warm summers (15°C to 25°C in the valleys) and cold winters (−20°C to −5°C). Snow is possible at any time of year at altitude. The Icefields Parkway can be icy in winter and requires snow tires or chains.

✈️ Getting There

The gateway to the Canadian Rockies is Calgary International Airport (YYC). Banff is just 90 minutes west of Calgary on the Trans-Canada Highway. The classic road trip runs Calgary → Banff → Lake Louise → Icefields Parkway → Jasper, returning via Edmonton (YEG) or looping back through the David Thompson Highway. The Banff Airporter runs regular shuttles from Calgary Airport directly to Banff.
